Steel plant targets P3bn import market

The country is set to open doors to its first downstream steel processing facility, with a new hot-dip galvanising plant in Mmamashia expected to begin production next year as the country seeks to reduce its dependence on South Africa for steel.

Once operational, the firm will be the country’s first major downstream steel-processing facility, with directors already aiming at supporting the country’s solar power industry, which relies heavily on galvanised steel.

The facility will have a planned production capacity of about 100,000 tonnes a year, equivalent to roughly 220 tonnes a day. Construction is expected to be completed by December, with production targeted for the first quarter of 2027.

The situation is exacerbated by the ruling party’s admission that some of its most important election promises remain unfulfilled. This is not the change many Batswana had expected. The UDC was elected into power on a strong promise to improve lives, create jobs, protect workers and repair public services. It is therefore, not enough for the party to point only to new ministries, policies and long-term plans. These may be necessary, but...
