Stanchart 'best bank in emerging markets' for 2007

Standard Chartered Botswana is becoming a jewel of Africa for the international bank, contributing 40 percent of the operating income in retail business from the African region, Raheed Ahmeed has noted.

Powered by Botswana's strong Gross Domestic Product per capita, which is among the highest in Africa, Stanchart's consumer banking is contributing even more than the more populous Nigerian market and strong economies like Kenya.

Ahmeed, who is Head of Consumer Banking (Africa) for Standard Chartered Plc, said the Botswana market was a distinctive one with enormous opportunities. He was speaking at a cocktail party hosted by the bank in honour of his visit and that of Anne Grant, Group Chairperson of Capital Markets in London, to Botswana at the Gaborone Sun on Monday.
