'S/Phikwe Businesses Fleece Consumers'

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Businesses in this copper-nickel mining town have ripped off consumers in excess of P600 000 in course of year, the Department of Trade and Consumer Affairs has revealed.

Financial matters topped the list in the fraud.Speaking during a workshop to promote fair business practices in Selebi-Phikwe last Wednesday, a senior official of Consumer Affairs, Simasiku Simasiku, said the value of goods involved in disputes in the period April 2006 to March 2007 was P609, 700.

This called for the establishment of complaints handling and management systems, he said. According to data on consumer complaints for periods 2005/2006 and 2006/2007, the Selebi-Phikwe office of the Department of Consumer Affairs alone received and processed 247 and 284 cases respectively.
