Spar re-brands to dispel misconceptions

There is a perception among Batswana that the Spar brand is for white people, since it does not do much to give back to Botswana, the company's Senior Retail Operations Manager, Ken Darby, has observed.

Because of this, the management of the chain store decided to re-brand the Spar operation in Botswana to give it a local feel and make it more reflective of Batswana who have supported the store for over four decades, Darby told journalists in Gaborone this week.

"We have decided to take an approach that brings the people of Botswana on board," he said. "There is a running promotion where we are giving away 10 Kia Picantos to 10 lucky winners. The whole promotion is worth over P1 million. This is our way of saying we appreciate the support we are getting from Batswana and want them to own the brand."
