Botswana Railways' revenue from the movement of goods last year rose to P255.4 million up nearly 10 percent from 2010, in the first look at the parastatal's finances since its 2009/10 financial year.

The Auditor General and the Parliamentary Committee on Statutory Bodies have slammed Botswana Railways for failing to provide updated audited financial statements.  This year, the Parliamentary Committee was forced to rely on the 2008/09 statements, while the Auditor General could not include Botswana Railways in his latest report issued in April 2012.  This week, a peek at the parastatal's books was availed by Statistics Botswana in a data brief on the country's transport and communications sector.  According to the brief, Botswana Railways earned P255.4 million from goods traffic coming into Botswana, leaving the country, moving within the country, and goods passing through in transit to other countries.

During the same year, the parastatal transported 2.03 million tonnes of goods under the same categories, representing an increase of 1.2 percent from 2010.  "After going down in 2007, the revenues have been growing steadily from 2008 to 2011, showing a positive correlation with quantity of goods carried," reads Statistics Botswana's brief.
