'Smart Partners' to focus on improved living standards

Consensus at the recent Global Southern Africa International Dialogue (SAID) 2008 was that while many African countries are on the road to economic growth and recovery, the challenge is now to transform the growth into improved living standards for the people.

 SAID is part of the Smart Partnership Dialogue series implemented by the Commonwealth Partnership for Technology Management (CPTM) to promote partnerships in the public and private sectors between southern Africa and some Commonwealth countries.

A statement from the acting permanent secretary in the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, Taufila Nyamadzabo, says SAID 2008, which was held in Lusaka, Zambia from 28 to 31 July, had observed that the widespread economic development and diversification was due to improved commodity prices or greater political and economic stability. "We now need to translate those gains into improved living standards of our people," Nyamadzabo's statement says. The Minister of Finance and Development Planning Baledzi Gaolathe attended on behalf of President Ian Khama.
