MAUN: Sluggish growth in the property sector here has been described as a major impediment to business growth.

Maun's growth is fuelled by the fast expanding tourism sector. Moreover, the opening of the Boseto Copper mine near Maun and other envisaged mineral findings elsewhere in Ngamiland are expected to catapult the district into a mining powerhouse. It is expected that mining in Botswana's resource rich district will eventually benefit the property sector particularly in Maun, Ngamiland's administrative and commercial hub.

Speaking during a recent council sitting, NWDC chairman Lathang Molonda said there is stunted growth in the sector attributable to the dominance of the agriculture sector in the district, particularly cattle production.Molonda said despite agribusiness woes in the district - Foot and Mouth Disease, poor soils, shortage of water and crop damage by wild animals -  the majority of entrepreneurs show unwillingness to invest in newer opportunities to diversify from the ailing agribusiness.
