Slim prospects for "lost P115m" mining appeal

Local analysts say an Australian firm that recently appealed to the Office of the President over the rejected extension of a lucrative zinc and silver lease, has little prospects of success.

By the time of the rejection in May, Mount Burgess had spent 14 million Australian Dollars (P115 million) since 2003, on various studies and activities on two Ngamiland sites, eventually proving mineralisation of 33 million tonnes of both zinc and silver.

Minerals, Energy and Water Resources Minister Kitso Mokaila rejected the application for a two-year extension citing his dissatisfaction with the speed at which the agreed work programme for the project is being undertaken. The company's directors subsequently filed an appeal to both the Ombudsman and Vice President Ponatshego Kedikilwe challenging both the rejection and the 14 months they allege the ministry took to arrive at the decision.
