The Competition Authority (CA) has revealed that local retail chain, Sefalana, also made a bid for the troubled SupaSave group, eventually losing out to Choppies which put in a superior offer.

The Authority recently approved Choppies' acquisition of SupaSave and its distribution wing, MegaSave, while citing its misgivings' about the market share to be enjoyed by the united entity. The deal is expected to take Choppies' mass grocery retail market share beyond 30 percent, a statutory figure for caution according to the Competition Act.

In announcing the approval two weeks ago, the Competition Authority revealed that SupaSave had put itself up for sale in 2011, with Choppies being one of three bidders to come forward. The Authority declined to reveal the identity of the other two bidders citing confidentiality clauses invoked by the potential buyers.
