Second gas energy firm for Botswana

The Coal Bed Methane(CBM) and Geo thermal energy sector is set for a boost with the entrance of a second player in the industry that has been relatively underdeveloped in Botswana, but has massive potential to plug the energy supply gap in the country.

In a statement released this week, Australian Stock Exchange listed company, Earth Heat Resources (formerly Fall River Resources), said it has signed heads of agreements under which it says it will commence the acquisition of several prospective geothermal and coal bed methane gas  assets in Botswana and other African countries. The company says that a lack of energy resources in emerging African countries is hindering development and growth in countries such as Kenya, Botswana and Djibouti, which are stable and have significant unexploited alternative energy sources. Estimates are that local coal-bed methane resources could support power development of up to one gigawatt and therefore provide the opportunity to diversify the region's energy portfolio.

Presently Kalahari Energy in partnership with South Africa's Exarro is the only company actively pursing the production of CBM energy in Botswana following the collapse of another energy firm, Saber Energy.
