SADC - wide search for alternative energy continues

LUSAKA: With the looming power crisis in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region and high oil prices on the world markets, new energy supply strategies are being examined throughout the region.

It has been estimated that by this year's end, power shortages in the SADC region will become more pronounced, and that an investment of US $ 5.2 billion (about P32.7 billion) will be required to enhance electricity generation by 2011.

This is the reason that inter-connector projects are now encouraged in the SADC region.
The US$ 5.2 billion estimation of the investment necessary to offset the looming power shortages came out of a meeting of the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) held in Lusaka, Zambia recently.
