SADC trade talks are "95% settled" - De Gucht

The European Union's trade commissioner, Karel De Gucht, says negotiations with Botswana and other SADC states for a new Economic Partnership Agreement are 95 percent settled with solutions for the outstanding issues reachable in months.

Addressing local media at the end of a whistle-stop visit to Botswana on Friday, the EU's top trade chief revealed that a SADC and EU ministers' meeting would be held soon to add impetus to the efforts to finalise a trade deal before year end.

"Everyone has to make up their minds and the problems on the table can be resolved," he said."What's left on the table does not require months and months of negotiations and with the necessary political will, we can do this before the end of the year."I hope the September round (of negotiations) will be the last."
