'SA power projects pose no threat to Limpopo River'

MARTINS-DRIFT: South Africa's Department of Water Affairs has allayed the fears of farmers downstream the Limpopo River in both countries that the ongoing projects there for power supply augmentation in South Africa present a threat to the eco-system and their livelihoods.

The Tuli Block Farmers Association and their counterparts in South Africa have been concerned that the current upgrading of Grootgeluk Power Station, the development of Medupi Power Station and the upgrading of a coal mine to feed the two power stations could have a serious impact on the survival of the Limpopo River because the projects get water from the two tributaries that feed the Limpopo.

Infact, the projects are an illustration of regional inter-dependence because the coal feed in South Africa is interconnected to Mmamabula power grid in Botswana, which will also need water from the Limpopo.
