SA credit watchdog to handhold Botswana

The CEO of South Africa’s National Credit Regulator (NCR) is due in the country next week for a convention aimed at guiding Botswana to manage a P40 billion industry whose main actors have been blamed for high household indebtedness.

Various experts have said a lack of education and responsibility by the providers of financial products such as commercial banks, furniture shops and micro-lenders, is largely behind the debt crisis most households are in.

In South Africa, the eight-year-old watchdog is tasked with regulating the credit industry and recently proposed a R300 million fine on a bank for irresponsible lending practices.
