SA, Ausie JV to explore for CBM in Botswana

South Africa's Sasol this week signed a joint venture agreement with Australia's Origin Energy to explore for Coal-Bed Methane (CBM) in the Central District.

The joint venture, through Sasol Petroleum International (Pty) Limited (SPI) the wholly owned upstream oil and gas subsidiary of Sasol Limited will be known as Kubu Energy Resources (Pty) Ltd.Studies by the Department of Geological Survey estimate the country has 17 billion tonnes of CBM, which are an extension of the Karoo Basin that stretches throughout southern Africa.

Several companies hold exploration licences for CBM, with a handful close to commercial extraction. The Kubu joint venture has prospecting rights covering approximately 3,000 square kilometres of Botswana, a country that is increasingly attracting investment into its untapped estimated 201 billion tonnes of coal reserves.
