Rural Communities should benefit from diamonds

As Botswana has achieved a key milestone in the relocation of the Diamond Trading Company (DTC) from London, rural communities should also be part of the beneficiation, a South African-based mining expert has advised.

In her remarks at the 2013 Global Expo last week Bridget Radebe, Executive Chairperson and Director of Mmakau Mining in South Africa, urged the government of Botswana to ensure that rural communities and small villages benefit from diamonds.

"Botswana has done a good job in maximising benefits in diamond ownership.  Now the country should make a holistic approach to make sure that minor groups are not left out," said Radebe.
