Retailers press govt for fuel review

Amid reports that fuel retailers are pushing for adjustments of up to one pula per litre for petrol and diesel, Cabinet is today expected to consider proposals from a multi-sectoral fuel pricing committee.

While the one pula mentioned by industry sources is the difference between administered and prevailing fuel prices or "under-recovery," it is unlikely that petroleum retailers will secure that quantum of increase. This is given government's desire to cushion the recovering economy against sudden shocks that could derail progress made thus far this year.

The sources say it is also unknown whether the Petroleum Pricing and Operational Committee (PPOC) actually recommended an upward review of fuel prices or recommended that prices be maintained. Petroleum prices were last increased on August 1, 2009.
