Report stalls Phikwe's development - mayor

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Deputy mayor Rosemary Mukwewa has said that very little can be done to address the town's economic problems before implementation of last year's diversification report. She told Business Week that they could be running programmes to create employment and reduce poverty by now had it not been for the delay in the implementation of the recommendations of the report.

"Anything that we would attempt to do without the report will be a duplication of efforts because it covers all areas that would catapult the town to greater heights. Its implementation will definitely give us a way forward." She revealed that nothing much will happen this year towards the improvement of the town's economy, which is reliant on mining. However, Mukwewa is hopeful that the construction of Polometsi Dam expected to start this year will help to boost the town's economy. She stated that there is no long-term sustainable strategies to develop the town's economy outside the report. She urged Botswana Development Cooperation (BDC) to reduce the rents of their factory shells to get tenants. The shells are currently lying idle at the industrial site.

"We have agricultural programmes that have been approved by the government. A joint collaboration between the Land Board and Ministry of Agriculture could allocate agricultural land to the youth to enable them to embark on intensive farming and keep their farm products in the factory shells."
