Replenish Pula Fund for postery-IMF

As diamond revenue plateaus in the next few years, government must move swiftly to cut down its overall expenditure and rebuild the weakened Pula Fund for the benefit of the country's future generations, the IMF has recommended.

In a statement released this week at the conclusion of a recent mission to Botswana, the IMF said government has an overwhelming task of cutting down its expenditure, which as a percentage of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is higher than international standards, through thorough evaluation of the quality of spending. Said the statement:

"Botswana faces the daunting challenge of reducing the relative size of the government in the economy. The government's overall expenditure envelope (as a share of GDP) is very high, thus warranting a thorough assessment of pockets of unproductive spending and ways to increase efficiencies.
