Pula slides against major currencies

The pula lost value in nominal terms against currencies of all the country's major trading partners except the US dollar in the past 12 months, the Bank of Botswana (BoB) reports.

BoB says on an annual basis, the pula appreciated by 5.6 percent against the USD, while the largest annual depreciation was 5.4 percent against the euro and the smallest 2.2 percent against the British pound.

The pula also fell against the rand on a year-to-date basis. However, on a monthly basis during September 2007, the pula's movements against most major trading partner currencies were mixed. While it depreciated against the euro (1.1 percent) and the rand (1.0 percent), it appreciated against the pound (2.3 percent), the US dollar (2.5 percent) and the yen (1.7 percent).
