Power outages are faults, not load-shedding - BPC

The Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) says inclement weather and a contractor mishap caused the recent blackouts in parts of Gaborone, and not load-shedding as widely believed.

Beginning last week, several areas in western, northern and central Gaborone, including locations such as Block 6 and Block 9, Ginger and the mixed land-use district around the Main Mall, were affected by power cuts reaching up to three hours in duration. Consumers wary of frequent load-shedding in the years since 2008 immediately took to social media such as Twitter and Facebook to express their anger at what they believed was the resumption of power interruptions.

Yesterday, however, the power utility said the interruptions were due to faults and not load shedding. "At the weekend, we experienced a fault near the University of Botswana roundabout, which affected areas within the vicinity, such as Extension 9," BPC spokesperson, Spencer Moreri said.
