Poverty is on the decline - professor

In Botswana, poverty has generally been declining over time from 59 percent in 1985/86 to 47 percent in 1993/94 to 30 percent in 2002/03.

Speaking at the recent Decent Work workshop at Boipuso Hall in Gaborone, Economics professor at the University of Botswana Happy Siphambe said a part of the poverty reduction comes from social safety nets, although the problem is that they are unsustainable.

Botswana has a number of social safety nets "most of which are not means-tested, leading to a lot of leakages. Job creation needs to be emphasised since it is the sustainable means to poverty reduction. Poverty is concentrated in the western region of the country," he said.
