President Festus Mogae this week inaugurated Pluczenik Botswana, a diamond-polishing factory owned by the Pluczenik Group, a De Beers veteran site-holder, as the Diamond Trading Company (DTC) announced it was on track to create 3,000 jobs after next year.

The Belgian Group set up a diamond polishing company in January 2006 in Gaborone with an initial capital injection of $3 million (about P18.5 million) as the country moved into diamond beneficiation. President Mogae admitted that the setting up of diamond factories and the relocation of the Diamond Trading Company to Botswana was the culmination of a deal that resulted in Government extending the Jwaneng mine lease for 25 years last year.

The deal between Botswana and De Beers saw the formation of DTC Botswana that will sort, value, aggregate, sell and market rough diamonds. The Pluczenik factory is located at Block 8 Industrial in Gaborone. It currently employs 100 people with the number expected to grow to 400 as the factory expands.
Currently, the factory buys its rough diamonds from DTC London, but it will purchase locally when DTC Botswana becomes operational.
Although not using state-of-the-art technology at the moment, Pluczenik Botswana expects to break even after five years.
