Pioneering Diamond Training Centre takes shape

A high-powered delegation from the Indian Diamond Institute (IDI) is due in the country this week to kickstart the establishment of a state-of-the-art diamond training centre in Oodi, to serve the African continent, Mmegi has learnt.

Established in 1978, the IDI is a world-class institute offering ISO-accredited diplomas and certificates in diamond processing, assortment and grading, gemmology, jewellery designing and manufacturing, computer application and management programmes.

The Institute also boasts hi-tech research, laboratory, library as well as practical facilities. Last year, Botswana beat off bids from South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe to win the right to host the IDI in Africa, under a partnership between the African Union and India. To be known as the India-Africa Diamond Institute, the training is expected to provide backbone support for the growing diamond manufacturing industry.
