Phikwe co-op to defy commissioner's orders

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Members of the Selebi-Phikwe Consumers' Co-operative Society have vowed to disregard far-reaching directives issued by the Commissioner for Co-operative Development.

In addition, the co-op will launch an appeal against the directives and engage an independent auditor, among a number of resolutions. The deputy chairman of the management committee, David Tukishi, told a Special General Meeting at Lapologang Junior Secondary School over the weekend where this resolution was adopted that only some of the directives would be implemented. This was because some of the directives, such as to lease out the main shop in downtown Selebi-Phikwe, were harsh, Tukishi said. Among a raft of directives, the commissioner wanted stock at the main shop be transferred to the Western Area branch and freezing of procurement of new stock.

The society was also ordered to devise a  payment plan with creditors towards clearing all debts and to retrench staff.  However, in a modified version of the directives, the management committee will instead lease out the Western Area branch and a warehouse and keep the main shop downtown.
