Phane Knocks Down Meat Sales In Butcheries

FRANCISTOWN: The presence of the edible Mophane worm popularly known as Phane in the market is expected to push meat prices down as Batswana turn to the revered worm to supplement their diet.

Phane usually competes with meat for the same market. Phane harvesting usually starts towards the end of the year and ends towards the end of January. Sales usually begin around December until early February or early March. Phane is considered to be nutritious and has less side effects as compared to meat. For this reason during the Phane season most consumers resort to eating the delicious worm mostly found in the northern part of the country to supplement their diet.

During the Phane season butcheries and meat traders in the country usually record low meat sales. Although they are yet to reap notable profits,  phane traders are adamant that their sales will rise during the first half of the year. In fact some traders already say consumers are beginning to scramble for the precious worm.
