Orapa 90MW station readies to rumble

The 90-megawatt Orapa power station is scheduled to be commissioned before March, with preparatory tests held earlier this month generating 44.5 MW from one of the two turbines, Mmegi has learnt.

Once running, the dual-fuel power station will feed off diesel to act as a peak power plant that the Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) can tap into as and when needed. The power plant will thus mitigate power cuts, with its output being used to power Debswana and the nation at large.

Its developers say the Orapa station can also act as a base-load power station, in which case it would add to the generation capacity and mix presently available capacity in the country. However, this option would likely be unpalatable to the BPC as the station consumes nearly 35, 000 litres of diesel an hour, making its power highly costly.
