Oppenheimer Calls For Transparency In London Lecture

The Chairman of De Beers, Nicky Oppenheimer, has emphasised the importance of diamonds to development and democracy in countries in which the precious natural resource is mined, especially Botswana.

The world diamond industry magnate was delivering a keynote address entitled Diamonds, Development and Democracy at the annual Lubbock Lecture in Management Studies at Said Business School at Oxford University last week.

He said while African diamonds had been dominated by serious challenges, gems would remain a core role player in development and democracy wherever they were found.
