Oil deal looms as Khama visits Nigeria

As efforts to diversify Botswana's sources of fuel reach new levels, President Ian Khama leaves for Nigeria today with speeding up finalisation of a crude oil supply deal with the West African country likely to be high on the agenda.

The Head of Chancery at the Nigerian High Commission in Gaborone, Moses Adeoye, has expressed optimism that Khama's visit will add impetus to the deal that was set in motion by an oil deputation from Botswana to his country last year.  Following last year's fuel shortages that exposed Botswana's perilous dependence on South Africa for fuel, the Ministry of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources galvanised efforts to secure alternative fuel import routes through Mozambique, Namibia and Nigeria.

If sealed, the Nigerian supply will come through the Namibian port of Walvis Bay. Government spokesman Jeff Ramsay yesterday confirmed that Khama would leave for West Africa today, although he was short on details of the agenda.
