MAUN: Kgori Safaris, a company co-owned by former cabinet minister and Botswana ambassador to Japan Jacob Nkate has been awarded a tender to manage the long disputed Tsaro Lodge in the Okavango Delta.

Tsaro Lodge was previously owned by the Khwai Development Trust (KDT) under the Community Based Natural Resources Programme. The lodge consists of a 16-bed facility and eight chalets on a plot abutting the northern boundary of the wildlife rich Moremi game reserve. It is located in an area of five hectares in NG 19, which is a concession area that was leased to KDT under the Community Based Natural Resources management programme (CBNRM.)

Kgori Safaris managing director, Jim van Rensburg told BusinessWeek that they won the tender this year after applying following its advertisement by the Botswana Tourism Organisation in 2014. He explained that after bidding they finally won the tender to operate the prime-located lodge. van Rensburg, who said he jointly owns Kgori with Nkate, explained that they were given permission to operate the lodge for five years in its current status but will then demolish old buildings to construct new environmentally-friendly structures.
