New land policy to encourage private sector participation

The Minister of Lands and Housing, Nonofo Molefhi, says the refined land policy will provide for effective management and disposal of land for maximum economic benefit.

In his Committee of Supply speech to Parliament last week, Molefhi said the revised policy called for greater participation of the private sector in the delivery of serviced land and that his ministry had prepared draft guidelines on private sector participation in land and housing delivery.  "It is my expectation that once approved by government, this initiative will relieve government of the burden of providing upfront resources for servicing land," the minister said, adding that it would also give an opportunity for the private sector to invest in land, thus making it realise its full potential to contribute meaningfully to the growth of the economy.

However, Minister Molefhi did not say when the new land policy would come into effect. In a related matter, the minister said his ministry had surveyed a total of 1 462 plots in Palapye, 1 550 plots in Moshupa and 1 200 plots in Gantsi over the last financial year describing this as "tremendous progress".  Molefhi said another notable achievement was made in digital line mapping that had covered 55 settlements.  In addition, 223 updated medium scale digital maps covering the western part of Botswana and 20 maps covering the eastern part were produced.
