Nearly 700 more could be axed in Debswana operations review

Debswana's Operations Review that began in 2008 has seen 600 people lose their jobs so far with a further 671 likely to meet the same fate this year.

The operations review, which is meant to make the company more efficient, is targeting to offload about 1, 278 employees as the identified model of transforming the company "could not absorb all the employees at the mines".

Responding to Mmegi BusinessWeek questions on how many employees were affected by the Review, Debswana Group Manager, Public and Corporate Affairs, Esther Kanaimba-Senai, said although the review process is still on-going, about 600 people had so far been affected.
