Mps calls for changes to Trade Act
The Member of Parliament (MP) for South East South, Odirile Motlhale, has criticised the practice in which South African chain stores sell almost everything, even products that should be reserved for businesses owned by Batswana.

Contributing to the debate on President Ian Khama's State of the Nation Address in Parliament last week, Motlhale complained that some of these supermarkets even sell chicken products like menoto (chicken feet), which should be reserved for Batswana. He called for the amendment of the Trade Act to thist effect, saying departmental stores should not be allowed to sell such products.

In response, the Minister of Trade and Industry, Dorcas Makgatho-Malesu, said menoto will transform the well-being of Batswana and that the Reservation Policy actually goes beyond menoto. "But how can Ipelegeng transform Batswana?," Motlhale shot back. He was referring to the government's programme in which Batswana are hired as casual labourers. Makgatho-Malesu further told the MP that the menoto which are sold in supermarkets have been supplied by Batswana. But another MP, Isaac Mabiletsa, accused the minister of misleading the House.
