Morupule A revamp to cost P1.4bn

The refurbishment of the suspended Morupule A power station will cost P1.36 billion, with seven contractors lined up to bid for the resuscitation project, BusinessWeek has learnt.

The estimated cost is well above the P500 million mentioned since 2011 by various officials as the possible cost of a revamp.

The 25-year-old power station was placed on care and maintenance two years ago after plant availability dropped to below 30% due to aging components. Morupule A, capable of generating 132 MW gross electricity, was suspended after an unfavourable cost benefit assessment, worsened by optimism at the time around Morupule B.
