Mmamabula communities in limbo as investors tussle

The ongoing tussle between Indian and Chinese investors has raised fears that thousands of villagers and the general economy could end up sold short in the dispute around the development of the 2.83-billion tonne Mmamabula Energy Project (MEP).

Yesterday, CIC Energy, which currently holds prospecting licences, technical studies and rights for MEP, said the closure date for the proposed takeover by Indian firm JSW had been postponed to March 15.

The postponement has been necessitated by a last minute dispute between CIC Energy and GCL Botswana, its Chinese development partner in the 300-megawatt Mookane Domestic Power Project (MDPP). The MDPP will tap into a section of MEP coal resources to power a 300MW power station exclusively for domestic uses.
