Mmamabula communities in cash windfall

MMAPHASHALALA: Twenty-seven villagers in Mmaphashalala became the first to taste the fruits of the Mmamabula Energy Complex (MEC) this week when the project developer forked out P1.6 million for land acquired for the power station and coal mine.

Under project developer CIC Energy's Resettlement Action Plan, 22 field owners received compensation in both new land and cash, with the payment portion due to have been deposited this week. Five field owners opted for a cash-only compensation, deciding to pursue avenues besides other than agriculture in the area.

The latest developments mark the end of five years in limbo for the affected villagers whose land was appropriated for the mammoth MEC. During the time, the villagers received a seasonal crop loss allowance to compensate for the suspension of farming activities.
