Ministry formulates strategy on trade talks

The Ministry of Trade and Industry intends to develop a comprehensive integrated strategy to guide negotiations in trade in services either at regional or international levels as the government now eyes the services sector to be more effective in achieving economic diversification than the manufacturing sector.

The negotiations are meant to progressively liberalise the services sector - which includes banking, construction, tourism, transport and communication - with a view to ultimately opening the economy to international players while simultaneously awarding local companies the same opportunities to expand into the regional and internal markets.

Speaking at a seminar to share progress on the negotiations in trade in services in Gaborone this week, Permanent Secretary Banny Molosiwa said there was need to effectively negotiate trade in services with Botswana's trading partners because the sector could bring accelerated growth to the economy.
