The mining industry hobbled into 2010 saddled with the bruising effects of a year of operational collapse. From exploration to production to markets, all mineral commodities suffered the harshest effects of the recession with the industry contracting by abouta third before the industry's sheer doggedness put it on course to recovery, writes MBONGENI MGUNI

The country entered 2010 with one of its four diamond mines, Damtshaa, suspended and operations at the massive Orapa No. 2 plant tottering after intermittent production during 2009.

Under its continuing Operational Review, Debswana announced that 1, 278 jobs would either be shaved off or outsourced by March 2011, while its financial muscle would be focussed on the P24-billion Cut 8 Project - the company's hope for sustained production amid declining mineral resources.
