Mining sector shed over 4 000 jobs

The mining industry has registered a 36-percent decline in labour complement on a year-to-date basis as companies felt the pinch of the global economic crisis.

Delivering his keynote speech at the Botswana Resource Sector Conference in Gaborone on Wednesday, the Minister of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources Ponatshego Kedikilwe said at the end of April 2009, there was a decline of 36 percent, leaving the employment figure at 11, 494 from December 2008.

 This means a total of 4,137 people lost their jobs in the period under review, mainly due to cancellations or scaling down of some projects. The minister said only the stay-in-business projects are being pursued by most of the companies at this stage.
