Metal price crunch hits Tati Nickel

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Tati Nickel Mine is feeling the impact of falling global metal prices resulting from the global economic downturn.

Plummeting base metal prices are expected to hit Tati Nickel and BCL mines, two of the country's major producers of copper and nickel.

Copper prices fell 9 percent from $4 210 to $3 990 a ton while nickel was down from $11 900 to $11 500 last week. The downward trend is expected to continue. In the past 18 months, commodity prices are estimated to have fallen by about 80 percent.
