Finance and development planning minister Kenneth Matambo will this week chair a key meeting of 21 African states at the ongoing World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Spring Meetings in Washington.

The Africa Group 1 Constituency meeting, which will take place alongside other World Bank and IMF deliberations, is primarily designed to enhance Africa's voice and status within the Bretton Woods institutions.

The meeting this year comes as Nigeria's Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala became the first African challenger to the US' dominance of the World Bank's presidency since its establishment. "The meeting will discuss developments in the Constituency and other updates pertaining to the reforms taking place at the World Bank such as the election of the new President of the World Bank Group," finance ministry officials said.
