Letter from Jerusalem: Zero tolerance for conflict stones in 2007

FRANCISTOWN: The holy city of Jerusalem will be the venue of the fifth annual meeting of the World Diamond Council (WDC) on May 9 and 10, when unprecedented working groups on conflict diamonds will meet to examine progress made by the Kimberley Process, while industry leaders will confirm their commitment to the KP and build on the momentum of a successful education campaign last year.


Responding to Business Week questions on behalf of the WDC Chairman Eli Izhakoff, Carson Glover of the WDC's New York office revealed that after the United Nations Security Council lifted sanctions against Liberia last week, the WDC was ready to embrace that country and reinstate it as a member of the Kimberley Process Certification System (KPCS). 

"Given the fact that Liberia has been working diligently to put an internal system in place that meets the requirements of the KPCS, which was reported by the 3rd experts' mission team that has been on the ground in Liberia, the WDC is encouraged by the work and the future prospect of Liberia becoming a participant nation," said Glover.
