LEA seeks P245m for leather park

The Local Enterprise Authority (LEA) is seeking P245 million from government to establish a leather park in Lobatse following the finalisation of a feasibility study.

Briefing the media recently, LEA chief executive officer, Tebogo Matome said they hope to develop the park in 24 months. He stated that they are relying on government to provide the funds for the park that will have a Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP). "Currently, LEA is looking for funds to implement the project and we are hoping to develop the project in 24 months. LEA does not have enough capital for the project so we are relying on the government to help," Matome explained.

LEA commissioned a consultancy in March last year to conduct a feasibility study on the establishment of a leather sector park. The objective of the study was to evaluate the park area, its location and provide guidance on the protection of public health and environment, recommend development innovations and approach with particular emphasis on the application of cleaner technologies in the leather industry. The study was to evaluate benefits to the community due to the establishment of the park and to estimate the cost of a leather park with an effluent treatment plant and tanneries.
