Job losses loom at DTC

Retrenchments are inevitable in the diamond sector as DTC Botswana adopts cost-cutting measures aimed at securing long-term financial viability for the monopoly cartel.

Although the Diamond Trading Company of Botswana declined to provide details of a voluntary retrenchment package it has cobbled because negotiations with its employees union are currently underway, the company's Corporate Communications and Public Affairs Manager, Kago Mmopi, confirmed that the DTCB board had approved an 'offer' of voluntary separation with some of its employees.

"The DTC Botswana Board has approved some interventions to reduce the company's operating costs and protect its long-term financial viability," Mmopi said. "These include the introduction of a Voluntary Separation (VS) scheme, which in essence means that individual employees will decide whether to leave the company or not.
