Japanese firm trains Batswana in space age geology

Five more geologists from the Department of Geological Survey (DGS) recently started training in the use of remote sensing technology as part of a five-year agreement between Botswana and Japan.

The Japanese Oil, Gas and Metals Corporation (JOGMEC) signed the agreement with DGS for the training of Batswana geologists in remote sensing technology in 2008. It entails use of Japanese space satellites to survey for various minerals beneath soils in Botswana.

The agreement covers training and technical support to DGS over a period of five years. Thus far, five DGS geologists have undergone the five levels of training necessary and are sufficiently qualified to utilise remote sensing.
