Japan still committed to Africa despite global recession

TOKYO: Japan says it is still committed to fulfilling all the commitments it made to African countries, including Botswana, despite the global economic downturn that has left the Asian giant in the grips of its worst recession in decades.

Government officials here told Business Today that during the fourth Tokyo International Conference of Africa's Development (TICAD IV) last year, Japan promised to double aid to Africa and that it is still committed to the agreement.

"We had a meeting with all African ambassadors in Japan and the message was that despite the current situation, we will follow our commitments," the Director of the Second Africa Division in the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Seiji Okada, said last week.
