Inflation quickens to 8.8 percent

Driven by rising prices of food, health services and furnishings, the country's year-on-year inflation quickened to 8.8 percent in October from 8.6 percent in September.

According to Statistics Botswana, October's figures are the highest inflation has risen to this year, from a previous high of 8.7 percent recorded in August. They are also the highest witnessed since April 2009 when inflation was recorded at 10.2 percent.

Released yesterday, the figures indicate that in terms of percentage changes, indices representing health, furnishings and food recorded the greatest increases in descending order. Health rose by 1.6 percent, furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance by 0.6 percent, food and non-alcoholic beverages 0.6 percent and transport 0.4 percent.
