India forges closer ties with Africa

India has extended a US$5 billion line of credit to Africa over the next three years, the country's High Commissioner to Botswana, Madhava Chandra, has said.

Speaking at a press briefing in Gaborone on Friday, Chandra said the line of credit, along with a similar facility of US$300 for the new Ethio-Djibouti railway line, were some of the initiatives announced at the Second India-Africa Forum Summit (IAFS-II) that was held in Addis Ababa in May.

Other initiatives are the formation of more than 80 capacity building institutions in Africa.  India will implement five pan-African institutions through the African Union, 32 regional institutions through regional economic organisations, as well as country-specific institutions, Chandra said.
