Govt to invest P13m in ostrich farming

Government is to invest P13 million in a project that could see development of an ostrich industry for export to the European Union (EU) market.

Agriculture Minister Johnie Swartz disclosed in Parliament on Wednesday that in 2004 the EU approved the project, thereby allowing ostrich meat imports into members states.

The facility, otherwise known as the Dibete Ostrich Multiplication Unit, is to "act as a conduit to provide grower chicks to satellite farmers who will finish slaughter", Swartz said when presenting his ministry's budget estimates for 2007/2008 financial year.
