Govt starts repaying loans on unfinished aviation projects

Government has begun repaying millions of Pula in loans from international financiers for incomplete aviation projects that are also draining millions more from public coffers in cost overruns.

According to the 2012-13 budget estimates approved by Parliament this week, government will this year repay P4.4 million to the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) in interest on loans totalling about P117 million for the upgrading of the Sir Seretse Khama International and Kasane airports.

This year, the public purse will also pump out another P4.5 million to the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) in interest on the P124 million loan for the upgrading and expansion of the Sir Seretse Khama International Airport (SSKIA).
